Touted by some to be THE tea for clearer skin, Get Gorgeous Tea (GGT) seemed to beg for a closer look. More and more agree that beauty is truly an inside job. This includes what we eat and drink. Beauty is also enhanced when we feel good and are in good health. GGT is a part of The Republic of Tea’s Be Well tea line. So, how is it that this tea can claim to clear your skin you may ask?
By itself, red rooibos is said to be a miracle elixir. Hailing from South Africa, rooibos tea (it’s really an herb) is from the Aspalathus linearis bush plant and sourced for its medicinal properties. Rooibos is loaded with vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, copper, manganese, magnesium, zinc, and alpha hydroxy acid. This mighty herb has 50% more antioxidants than green tea, including antioxidants like aspalathin and nothofagin.
Aspalathin and nothofagin, reported to help with vascular inflammation, gives this tea an extra punch. Aspalathin, a rare antioxidant found in rooibos tea, assists in balancing blood sugar, improves insulin resistance, improves glucose absorption in the muscles, and boosts insulin secretion. Rooibos also has the flavonoids orientin and luteolin, which increases the mineral content in bones.
Rooibos is also a source of quercetin, which is good news for many reasons. Quercetin, an antioxidant, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory capacities. Because it helps to reduce inflammation, it can lower one’s blood pressure too. If that isn’t good enough, quercetin has been shown to protect against heart conditions that are connected to having high levels of cholesterol like atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. How? Quercetin increases the production of the good cholesterol (HDL), and this in turn keeps the bad cholesterol (LDL) from sticking to the artery walls. Good stuff, right?” Well, there’s more.
Just a few of the benefits associated with drinking rooibos tea include:
- Improves skin conditions (zinc, alpha hydroxy acid)
- Supports strong bones (calcium, manganese, orientin and luteolin)
- Prevents inflammation (quercetin)
- Promotes sleep (caffeine-free)
- Supports heart health (quercetin, aspalathin, nothofagin)
- Helps control diabetes (aspalathin)
Whew! Now don’t forget, GGT added to the already great qualities of the rooibos tea when it combined it with great ingredients like: chamomile (anti-spasmodic); orange peel (vitamins A, C and immune booster); Burdock (diuretic, anti-inflammatory, purifies the blood), red clover (treats indigestion, respiratory problems, menstrual cramps), hibiscus (lower blood pressure), and chasteberry (acne, PMS symptoms). While some sources claim that rooibos is used to treat allergies including hay fever, please note, many of these ingredients are flowers. So, go easy until you know how your body will react.
In addition to those who may have allergies to flower pollen, a word of caution is also true for those undergoing treatment for certain aliments. It is said that because rooibos is so potent, there is a possibility that it may interfere with chemotherapy for cancer patients. Although alpha hydroxy acids are comprised of acids that are naturally found in foods, (citric, glycolic, lactic…), pregnant and lactating women are warned against its use because of a potentially negative effect it may have on the child. When applied to the skin, alpha hydroxy acid can cause sun sensitivity. It isn’t clear if this would be a concern for those who consume it internally.
For some – given you need to drink it often and consistently for the best results – Get Gorgeous Tea is thought to be a bit pricey. Yet, if you are looking for an internal solution that may result in external improvement, Get Gorgeous Tea just may be the ticket.
